WCCI trains rural communities in biointensive agricultural pratices. Biointensive agriculture is an organic agricultural system that uses no fossil-fuel based fertilizers. The practice focuses on achieving maximum yields from a minimum area of land, while simultaneously increasing biodiversity and sustaining or restoring soil fertility. Research shows that bio intensive farms increase crop yield with less resources by using:
50-70% less land,
50-100% less fertilizers,
67-80% less water and
94-99% less energy
to produce a given amount of food than does conventional farming. For WCCI, biointensive farming addresses issues of food and economic security because it allows smallholder farmers to produce more food so they can feed their families and have more surplus to sell.
Biointensive agriculture is regenerative, providing greater soil health over the long term without the cost and environmental burden of materials from external sources.
